The unique experience of swimming in an ancient fish pond, the Roman Murenario: discovering the Costa degli Dei from Tropea to Sant’Irene, for lovers of snorkeling, adventure and unspoiled nature. (suitable from 5 years)
It is a stretch of coast that is mostly rocky with sandy stretches that hides wonderful unspoiled landscapes. A succession of inlets with clear water of a thousand shades, small cliffs with bays of golden sand bathed by a turquoise sea, where the dense vegetation slopes down to the sea and swim among hundreds of fish in the natural tanks of the ancient Roman fish pond, the Murenario that is 30 minutes by boat from the Tropea marina.
Where to swim:
– Murenario, a large limestone rock that emerges from the clear waters. Worked over the
centuries by the force of the sea and by the skilled hands of the ancient Romans who dug
numerous tanks for fish farming. Tanks still well preserved today, connected by semi-submerged
canals that were used for the recirculation of water and the supply of nutrients to the fish.
Swimming between the tanks is an incredible experience. Hundreds of fish, octopuses, starfish,
anemones, moray eels and an infinity of aquatic plants. Here, if you like, you can taste the fresh
sea urchins, caught by the skipper. (practice that does not damage the marine ecosystem and is in line with local regulations)
– Small cliff of Capo Cozzo, a wonderful wild beach of golden sand bathed by an emerald sea
– Michelino beach, a very suggestive strip of white sand
– Bay of 3 roosters, takes its name from the characteristic shape of the surrounding rocks, crystal
clear turquoise water
– Faraglioni of Pizzuta, cobalt blue sea
– Bay of Isola Bella in Tropea and the cave of lovers; suggestive with the ancient houses built
overlooking the cliff, the water so clear that you have the sensation of floating in the void.
